Our leather

Why saddle leather is the best choice for sustainable camera straps

Saddle leather is a robust and high-quality type of leather, known for its strength and exceptional durability. The saddle leather that we use for our camera straps is made from the skin of cows and buffalo and is mainly vegetable tanned. We would like to share why we chose this type of leather and what advantages it offers for our handmade camera straps.

1. The natural appearance of saddle leather

Saddle leather has a beautiful, natural appearance that can vary in color depending on the tanning process. This means that color differences can occur, even with leather from the same batch. With an open finish, a patina develops over time, a natural shine that makes the leather unique. This adds to the aesthetics of saddle leather camera straps, making them even more beautiful as time goes by.

2. Strength and sustainability of saddle leather

Saddle leather is one of the strongest and most durable types of leather. The leather is thicker than most other types of leather, often ranging from 3mm to 6mm or more, making it perfect for products that need to carry a lot of load, such as belts, bags and saddles. It retains its shape well even with heavy use, making it ideal for camera straps used daily by professional photographers.

3. Sustainable vegetable tanned leather

Vegetable tanning of leather uses natural materials, instead of heavy metals as in chrome-tanned leather. This results in a more environmentally friendly production process, which benefits both the environment and the end product. Vegetable tanned leather is biodegradable and has excellent absorbency, making it easily react to dyes, oils and fats. This makes it ideal for personalizing handmade camera straps and other leather goods.

4. User-friendliness and processing of saddle leather

Saddle leather is easy to work with and ideal for techniques such as cutting, engraving and embossing. This workability makes it particularly popular with artisans who create handmade leather goods such as labels, key chains and camera straps. Excellent machinability allows us to provide personalized camera straps to suit the photographer's style and needs.

5. The pleasant smell of saddle leather

A defining characteristic of saddle leather is the rich, earthy scent that comes from the vegetable tanning process. This scent is often associated with authenticity and craftsmanship and can be experienced as very pleasant by leather lovers. It is a scent that contributes to the quality experience of your handmade camera strap

6. Saddle Leather: Sustainible for photographers

The combination of strength, natural appearance, user-friendliness and durability makes saddle leather the perfect material for handmade camera straps. It is ideal for applications where durability, aesthetics, and natural qualities are of great importance. This is why we only work with (European manufactured) saddle leather of the highest quality.
